JCS Silicon Valley Supports UTECH-IEEE Jamaica Workshop

The University of Technology, Jamaica School of Computing and Information Technology (UTECH/SCIT), in collaboration with the local IEEE chapter (IEEE-Jamaica Section), recently hosted the inaugural edition of the ‘Smart, Scalable and Secure’ workshop aimed at providing a forum for the exchange of advanced technology trends & developments – to the benefit of local communities, both academic and industry alike.  As a supporting partner in this initiative, members of the JCS Silicon Valley (JCSSV) diaspora facilitated the participation of speakers from Google, Cisco and other technology providers to share their insights on key topics such as Microservices, Kubernetes, Hybrid Cloud and Private 5G Architectures.

Professor Sean Thorpe, Head of UTECH/SCIT and Chair of this inaugural event, believed this was a highly beneficial collaboration to support expert discussions on such essential topics. He noted that the workshop represented an important first move to get Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean region on a whole to recognize the need to leverage Edge/IOT/Cloud/MIST/Osmotic Computing as the new paradigm shift in which any business albeit private and public sector need to engage, and is already looking forward to the 2nd staging in Dec 2022.

Google Developers Student Club the University of Technology

We are pleased to announce the launch of the Google Developers Student Club at the University of Technology, Kingston, Jamaica (Utech). As a collaborative partner of this initiative by Google, JCSSV seeks to facilitate learning opportunities for Utech’s students through mentorship and knowledge-sharing. The launch of this program followed the successful recent completion of a Google Summer of Coding Bootcamp, which was attended by over 50 students from Utech and other institutions across Jamaica. Along with JCSSV, Quarrio – a Silicon Valley company led by a member of our diaspora – also partnered in contributing to the Bootcamp activities.

JCSSV looks forward to helping advance the growth of Utech's student community through this initiative by Google.

Technology Innovation Center Launches Mentorship Program

The Technology Innovation Center at the University of Technology (UTECH-TIC), in collaboration with JCS Silicon Valley (JCSSV), recently announced the launch of a mentorship program to support the entrepreneurial journey of young professionals seeking to transform their business visions into reality. By adopting the theme, ‘Giving Wings to Dreams’, this collaboration aims to bring industry professionals from diverse backgrounds to provide guidance & knowledge transfer in various aspects of business development. JCSSV shares UTECH-TIC’s values and commitment to promoting the entrepreneurial aspirations of its members, and is proud to be a collaborative partner in its efforts to build a supportive ecosystem for advancing its vision.

Emphasizing the strategic benefit, Mr. Nigel Cooper, Head of the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership (JDSEEL)/Technology Innovation Centre, observed: “Many entrepreneurs and start-ups discount the importance of mentorship, but this can be a fatal mistake. A well designed and implemented mentorship program is in keeping with the Strategic Plan of UTECH-TIC and it is expected that the clients will reap benefits from this program.”

Ms. Yvonne Elliott Mattis, Incubator Manager, notes “’Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success' Henry Ford - so to our partners I say quoting Hellen Keller’s words ‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’. Through collaboration, we can help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams.”

JCSSV looks forward to strengthening this partnership as UTECH-TIC strives to become the premier host for entrepreneurial development in Jamaica and beyond. Please visit https://www.utech.edu.jm/service for more information about UTECH-TIC.
